As the old chineese saying states : “Only true man does not make any backups of his data”, besides replication of all mysql data, we decided to additionally back up ALL mysql data to Amazon with compressed mysqldump overnight. Since we are running mainly debian machines, we created unified nice looking script for this task.

This script assumes that you have  python “boto” module installed. In case you didn’t already install it just type :

root@app:~# easy_install boto
Searching for boto
Best match: boto 2.0rc1

You should then create ~/.boto file with credentials needed to log into Amazon S3 .

My .boto file looks like this :

Next thing is just to add following script to crontab :

It gets username and password for mysql from Debian’s root-like account so there’s no need to create special user.

Place above script in e.g. /root/scripts/amazon_mysql_backup.py and add it to cron with crontab -e command (from root account) just adding following line on the end :

30 4 * * *  python /root/scripts/amazon_mysql_backup.py > /dev/null 2>&1

This will create daily offline compressed backups on amazon.

As an example, our front-end developer and graphic Anna Glogowska (known in the internet as ‘mala me’) after hours of coding CSS takes up an animation. To be more precize she creates animations!

Now is time for something new and an excuse for the new animation was the Red Bull Canimation contest.
The short called simply ‘Canimation 2011′ was made in a traditional stop-motion technique (a kind of a cut-out animation, I suppose ) with use of lots of paper pieces and multifarious set.

Well this makes a change. Linus Torvalds has announced that the next version of the Linux Kernel release is to be ’3.0′.

Here’s Linus official statement :

“I decided to just bite the bullet, and call the next version 3.0. It will get released close enough to the 20-year mark, which is excuse enough for me, althoughhonestly, the real reason is just that I can no longer comfortably count as high as 40.”

Is that so?

The very last components that were needed to run Xen as a dom0 have finally reached kernel.org. The Xen block backend was one major feature missing from 2.6.39 dom0 support, and it’s now included. Posts on the Xen blog, at Oracle and at Citrix celebrate this achievement.”

So we will have full XEN support in kernel 3.x branch. Time to join Oracle and Citrix in celebration because deeper integration means squeezing more power from our cloud-ready environment.
